Looking down from heaven on the world of suffering creatures, Avalokiteshvara cried as he saw that more and more of them were in misery. Two Taras were born from the tears running down his cheeks, a tranquil white one on the left and a ferocious green one on the right. Tara is also known as Avalokiteshvara consort.
