Padmasambhava is seated on a lotus throne, holding a vajra in his right hand and a skull cup carrying the nectar of wisdom immortality in his left hand. A "khatvanga" (sacred trident) with three severed heads leans on his left shoulder, symbolizing freedom from the three principal causes of misery (kayas).
