Three of the most important personalities in the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism are Marpa Lotsawa, Milarepa, and Gampopa. Marpa (1012–1097) is recognized for his comprehensive translations that brought Indian Buddhist teachings to Tibet. Deep meditation technique was modeled by his disciple Milarepa (1052–1135), who is well-known for his life-changing experiences and spiritual songs. Milarepa's student Gampopa (1079–1153) founded the Kagyu tradition by fusing monastic discipline with Milarepa's yogic teachings. Gampopa also wrote important books such as "The Jewel Ornament of Liberation."
